Society benefits from the work of all its members, from doctors to firefighters to garbage collectors. A person can make a contribution no matter what type of work he does. However, society does tend to value some kinds of work more highly than others. When it comes to scientists and artists, for example, I believe that my society places more importance on the work of scientists.
For one thing, my society is technologically advanced and is very competitive in technology industries. We require ell-educated and skilled scientists to help us stay at the cutting edge. Therefore, many resources are put into the study of scientific subjects in my country. Another reason v tend to value the work of scientists more is that the discoveries they make often benefit many people. For example, a medical breakthrough can cure thousands, and a new product can bring convenience to many. Finally, the achievements of science are more concrete and, therefore, easier to understand than those of art. A machine either works e1l or it doesn’t, but the success of a piece of art often depends on the opinion of the audience. To sum up, both art and science are important in my society, but I believe that most people value the work of scientists more. They may do so because science benefits them more personally than art does, or simply because it is easier to understand. Whatever the reason, I believe that science will continue to be valued and supported in my society.
